Confirmation & Youth Ministry Program

The following is an explanation of the High School Confirmation & Youth Ministry structure at St. Thomas, which went into effect in the Fall of 2010 for incoming Freshmen, and has since been slightly revised and enhanced to add additional offerings.

Confirmation Preparation

Confirmation preparation is a two-year process.  Following accordingly, teens must complete all necessary components of the program for two years to be eligible to receive the Sacrament of Confirmation.  Thus, the earliest a teen would be eligible for receiving the Sacrament of Confirmation would be in the spring of their sophomore year.

Still, this is not a one-size-fits-all program.  As always, we are open to working with everyone on a case by case basis to address the time-frame and format of these requirements that make the most sense for each teen and family.

Options for Involvement Outside of Confirmation Program

Retreat Team – Any teen, sophomore and above, who has attended a LIFE Retreat (the 3-day retreat required for 2nd year of Confirmation prep) is eligible to join our Retreat Team that plans and organizes the upcoming retreats.  Generally LIFE Team meets weekly on Thursdays from 6:30 – 8:30 pm.

Youth Conferences (NCYC & RCYC) – We will typically take a group of young people and adults to the National Catholic Youth Conference (NCYC) every two years.  This is an amazing experience connecting teens from our parish with over 25,000 Catholic teens from around the country.  In 2018, the first Regional Catholic Youth Conference will be held in our diocese on Saturday, November 17.  These conferences are open to any teen interested in participating, whether enrolled in the confirmation program or not.

Mission Trips – Each summer we try to offer a local (non-overnight), national (7-day overnight) and international (8-day overnight) mission experiences.  This is a great opportunity for teens passionate about service and justice and living out the call in Matthew 25 to really dive deeper into what it means to truly be a servant.  Information is usually provided in the late fall or winter prior to the trip dates.

Pancake Breakfasts – Teens are allowed to volunteer for monthly pancake breakfasts.  Volunteers are typically needed from 7:30 a.m. – 1:30 p.m. on days that the breakfasts are held.  2018-19 Pancake Breakfast dates are as follows: September 16, October 14, November 18, December 16, January 13, February 3, March 10, and April 7.  You can join the volunteer text reminder list by texting @ympancakes to 81010.

LIFE Community Nights & Catholic Teen Nights – These are open youth nights for any teen in high school from St. Thomas and their friends.  Come to share real pain, real joys and experience real community, real faith, real life!  LIFE Community Nights generally run from 7:00 – 8:30 p.m. on Thursdays once a month throughout the school year.  Some LIFE Community Nights, when combined with Catholic churches throughout the area, we call Catholic Teen Nights.  2018-2019 LIFE Community Night dates are as follows (Catholic Teen Nights are marked by an “*”: August 14*, September 13, October 25*, November 15, December 13,  January 4* (Winter Social Event), February 28, April 11.
